Essential Oils – Our Blends

If you look around on Pinterest you will find thousands upon thousands of pins that share different oil blends for everything under the sun. My home page is taken over some days with suggested pins that have to do with essential oils and I come across at least 5-10 new ones each time I get on that share one or more blends someone is using themselves. And I am grateful. Just starting out I had no idea what any of it was, what it could do. I wanted to absorb all the information I could. And I’ll tell you, the more pins I saw with blends that I could use, the more oils I wanted to buy and try out for myself. But I refrained. I purchased just the basics (after lots of research) and I am so happy I did it that way. The oils I have are so versatile and offer a wide range of benefits. And now when an issue comes up that would be better addressed with another oil, I will research it then buy it if I feel it would best work for me or my family.

The following blends have been created after much research and trial-and-error. They provide relief of so many things that I think we will be able to get by using these until something major crops up. (Or until I work to create some for my sister (with terrible allergies and is in college) or my parents.) You’ll notice, too, that I have these blends in different colored bottles or they have different colored tops. This is to make it easier for us. Our guidelines: amber bottle or white top is for infants and sensitive skin; blue bottle or black top is for adults.

Check out this post to see the oils we have at our house and some of the benefits you will see from using them.

Heal & Soothe

This is one of my favorite blends. I use it for absolutely everything – bug bites, itchy skin, burns, cuts, acne, razor burn.wp-1475614384372.jpg

5mL Roller Bottle
2 drops Lavender Essential Oil
1 drop Tea Tree Essential Oil
Carrier Oil (I used Apricot Kernel Oil)

Fill almost to the top with carrier oil. Top with essential oils. Shake to blend. Apply directly as needed.

Infant Heal & Soothe

Notice that this is labeled for Infants. That is because, though essential oils are generally considered safe to use on anyone, they are a concentrated substance and can cause irritation or other more serious reactions on sensitive skin. This blend gets used to provide relief for the same troubles as the above blend, but is also used for diaper rash and eczema flarewp-1475614384371.jpg-ups on Roly Poly.

1oz (30mL) bottle (I used a dropper bottle)
1 drop Lavender Essential Oil
1 drop Tea Tree Essential Oil
Carrier Oil (I used Jojoba Oil)

Fill bottle to start of curve with Carrier Oil. Add essential oils. Shake to blend. Apply directly as needed.

Infant Cooling & Digestion

This is the other blend that gets used on Roly Poly. I use this at least once a day to help with her digestion. Put two to three drops on the belly and rub clockwise. She tends to get hiccups as well, so when those come up I also rub it straight up on her chest. Because this blend contains Peppermint Essential Oil it is also great when she is feeling warm or feverish.

1 drop Peppermint Essential Oil
1 drop Lavender Essential Oil wp-1475614384603.jpg
Carrier Oil (I used Jojoba Oil)

5mL Roller Bottle
1 drop Peppermint/Lavender blend (see next blend)
Carrier Oil (I used Jojoba Oil)

Fill with carrier oil. Add essential oils. Shake to blend.
For fever relief – rub 1 drop onto bottom of feet once every half hour until subsided.
For digestive aid – rub 1-2 drops on stomach in clockwise motion.

Peppermint & Lavender Blend

With the number of migraines I get I needed to have thwp-1475614384626.jpgis ready to go. Just a simple blend of Peppermint and Lavender Essential Oils to help ease my headaches and for an easy base blend for other recipes.

5mL bottle
60 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
60 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Add essential oils. Shake to blend.

Calming Toner & Moisturizer

I have super oily skin so even though, for most people, using oils doesn’t leave your skin feeling greasy, I’ve had to make adjustments to accommodate my own needs. I use this blend after washing my face, morning and evening. It is a combination toner wp-1475614384632.jpgand moisturizer, and also helps keep my acne in check because of the Tea Tree Essential Oil.

1oz (30mL) bottle (I use a dropper bottle)
15 drops Lavender Essential Oil
15 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
1 T Castor Oil
Witch Hazel Extract

Put castor oil into bottle. Add essential oils. Fill to top with witch hazel. Shake to blend before each use. Put 3-5 drops onto a cotton ball or cotton round and apply to face. Caution: Avoid under eye area as it can cause eyes to sting and water.

Cooling Toner & Moisturizer

This blend provides a similar action to the Calming Toner & Moisturizer, but provides an extra boost of astringent action from the Peppermint Essential Oil.wp-1475638571916.jpg

1oz (30mL) bottle (I use a dropper bottle)
15 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
15 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
2 tsp. Castor Oil

Immune System Booster

I will forever sing the praises of this blend. I created this specifically to find relief from my swollen tonsils. I woke up with them one morning and knew from past experience I would be in for a rough couple weeks as I fought off whatever I was trying to fight off. Even the steroid shot I got in high school (I had state choir auditions) didn’t help that much. But as soon as I applied this blend to my throat the swelling went away completely within about a minute and I was able to go about my day as if nothing was wrong. I continued to apply to my throat and the bottoms of my feet morning and night for the next 5 days, and by day 6 I didn’t need to use it anymore. Saved me a whole week of feeling lousy.wp-1475681073449.jpg

1oz (30mL) bottle (I used a dropper bottle)
2 drops Oregano Essential Oil
23 drops Lavender Essential Oil
4 drops Cypress Essential Oil
2 drops Lemon Essential Oil
2 tsp. Castor Oil
Apricot Kernel Oil

Put castor oil into bottle. Top with essential oils in order. Top with apricot kernel oil. Shake to blend. At the start of infection apply twice a day, or up to once every hour, to bottoms of feet. May be applied locally at areas of discomfort, i.e., throat. Caution: Oregano Essential Oil is very potent and could cause irritation to the mucus membranes.

Air Refresh & Repel Insects

When I made this blend I only had one spray bottle to use so I wanted it to do double duty. All the oils in this blend are great for cleansing the air as well as keeping insects out of your home.wp-1475614478851.jpg

1oz (30mL) glass spray bottle
25 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
60 drops Lavender Essential Oil
20 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
20 drops Lemon Essential Oil
Witch Hazel Extract
Purified Water

Fill halfway with witch hazel extract into bottle. Add essential oils in order. Top with purified water (helps lengthen shelf life of blend). Shake to blend before each use.
To purify air – Spray into any room to cleanse air and provide clean scent.
To repel insects – Spray around door frames and windows once a week to keep insects and spiders at bay.

Infant Healing Spray

This blend provides relief when Roly Poly ends up with a diaper rash. The ingredients used are also great for baby bruises. And adding Castor Oil provides a nice healing boost.

wp-1475614384602.jpg2.5oz (80mL) spray bottle (I used this aluminum spray bottle)
4 drops Lavender Essential Oil
1 tsp. Castor Oil
Witch Hazel Extract
Purified Water

Fill about halfway with witch hazel extract. Add essential oil. Add castor oil. Top with purified water. Shake to blend before each use.
For diaper rash – Spray onto bum at first sign of diaper rash. Allow to air dry before fastening diaper.
For bruises on body – Spray onto bruise. Allow to air dry or cover with loose-fitting clothes.
For bruises on face – Spray onto cotton ball or cotton round. Dab on bruise. Allow to air dry.

Using just the six essential oils and three carrier oils I currently have I am able to create so many different blends to address a wide variety of complaints in our home. They really are a wonderful, natural medicinal choice. Have you tried essential oils yet? What did you think? Have you found any blends you just love?
